Where Can I Buy Bonds?
The least expensive way to buy Treasuries is directly through the Treasury Department. You can use their online "Treasury Direct" service at http://www.publicdebt.treas.gov or buy through the mail. You can also buy Treasuries, like other bonds, through a brokerage firm, however you will have to pay a fee.

Buying a Treasury through a broker can make sense if you already have a brokerage account and if you think you might sell the Treasury before it matures. (If you buy from the Treasury Department and then want to sell on the open market you will have to open up a brokerage account anyway.) Be sure to work with a broker you like and trust.

Another way to invest in bonds is through a mutual fund, which in addition to reinvesting your money when a bond is paid back by the issuer, also provides diversification by investing in bonds from different issuers and with different maturities.
