To Do List
What Should I Do If I'm Getting Married?
> Back to Article
Here's a quick list of items you should make sure to address when dealing with your question or concern.
Sit down for a frank conversation about your financial habits, personalities, and expectations. Draw up a checklist beforehand of topics you want to discuss.
Consider a prenuptial agreement. For many it's the antithesis of romance, but in cases where one partner has substantial assets--often the case in a second marriage--it may be a wise move.
Divide up household financial responsibilities. Who will pay the bills, balance the checkbook, pay taxes, manage investments?
Complete all necessary paperwork. Make a list of every financial area potentially affected by the marriage--including checking and savings accounts, non-IRA brokerage accounts and mutual funds, insurance benefits and beneficiaries, and taxes--and make the adjustments you've jointly decided are needed.
